I Have a Yellow Belt in Shotokan Karate

I just got my certificate for 8th Kyu — or yellow belt — in Karate. It’s the first belt you can earn as an adult and while it’s a beginning step I’m feeling pretty good about it. I worked pretty darn hard to earn it.

Here’s the kata I had to perform as part of my test. This first time I watched this video I was almost sure I could never memorize the movements, let alone do them with enough conviction. But then I did. That’s what happens when you practice!

  1. Congrats Ian! That’s sweet.

  2. Nicely done! Congrats Ian. Kata were always hard for me to memorize, but once you do them enough times they “click” and then stick in memory.

Did you have to do any other techniques etc as part of your grading?

    1. Thanks! There were some more kicks (front snap, side thrust, and side snap) and more blocking during the basics and sparring parts of the grading. I stunk up the dojo during the sparring though and was singled out for instruction by the examiner during that part of the test. 🙂
